YouVersion
YouVersion is by far the most popular choice here, with millions of App Store ratings and more than 100 million Android installs. Its greatest strength is reach: thousands of Bible versions in more than 2,000 languages, plus thousands of reading plans and ways to read with friends. Selected versions have audio, with playback speed and timer controls. It is free and has no ads. If you want an NIV, ESV, KJV, or NLT recording, or a plan to follow, start here. According to YouVersion’s help page, audio in the main app requires an internet connection; Bible App Lite supports offline audio.
Dwell
Dwell is built around listening. You can choose from more than 20 voices and 14 translations, add background music, follow the text, and download audio for offline use. A limited selection is free; the full experience needs a subscription after a trial. It is a good choice if the sound of the reading matters most to you and you are comfortable paying for more voices and content.
Bible.is
Bible.is, from Faith Comes By Hearing, offers free, ad-free audio in more than 1,700 languages. Some recordings are dramatized with multiple voices, music, and effects. You can download a version for offline listening. Choose it if you want that style of production or need a language that smaller libraries do not carry.
The Bible in a Year
The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz) is a free podcast from Ascension, not a general audio Bible app. Across 365 daily episodes, Fr. Mike reads Scripture, prays, and offers commentary. It follows the Catholic canon, including the deuterocanonical books. A podcast app can download episodes for offline listening. Bible Gateway
Bible Gateway has a large library of translations and audio Bibles you can play in your browser, as well as an app. That makes it handy when you want to listen at a computer without installing anything. Free access includes ads; Bible Gateway Plus offers an ad-free experience. Check whether a particular translation has audio before settling on it.
Bible Garden: what makes it different
Multi Reading is Bible Garden's key feature. Build a sequence of any number of steps: a translation with its narrator, a pause, another translation, and so on. Play that sequence for each verse, paragraph, section, or chapter. You could hear a verse in the Berean Standard Bible, then in the World English Bible, then in Russian. All selected texts stay on screen together, with the one being read highlighted.
Bible Garden also offers:
- A separate speed for each Multi Reading step (0.5×–2.5×) and a separate text size. Save a sequence as a template to use again.
- Pauses in regular reading after each verse, paragraph, or section, either for a set time or until you tap Play. You can make room to reflect without reaching for the pause button every time.
- Exact verse-by-verse navigation. Previous and next land at the start of a verse because the text and recording are aligned. In Multi Reading, you can also move between translations of the same verse.
- A choice of narrators for some translations, with a voice preview. The Berean Standard Bible includes Bob Souer and David; the World English Bible (US edition) is read by Winfred Henson. English audio covers all 66 books in these recordings.
- Readable text with section headings, cross references, adjustable type, and words of Jesus in color where the translation supplies that markup. Footnotes open on tap in regular reading.
- Automatic progress tracking as you listen through a chapter or read its text, with progress by book and across the Bible.
- Regular playback controls: adjustable speed, automatic next chapter, background audio, and play/pause on the lock screen.
- Free use with no ads or purchases. The app is open source on GitHub.
Our library is small: English, Russian, and Ukrainian, with a few translations in each. We hand-pick each translation and recording for the quality of the text and sound. That focus is useful if you like to compare a carefully chosen pair as you listen; YouVersion is better when sheer breadth matters.
Bible Garden does not currently have an Android version, offline audio downloads, reading plans, search, or notes. An Android version and listening on the website are in our plans.
