To read the Bible in a year, aim for about three or four chapters a day: the 66 books in this plan contain 1,189 chapters. Listening takes about 11–14 minutes a day with the English recordings in Bible Garden, before any pauses. The calendar below gives you a daily reading from the Old Testament and either the New Testament or Psalms, or you can read straight through. Choose a pace that leaves time to pay attention.

- Parallel has two readings each day. The first follows the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi, leaving out Psalms. The second follows the New Testament from Matthew to Revelation on days 1–260, then Psalms on days 261–365.
- Straight through follows the books in order from Genesis to Revelation.
Both plans spread the reading across 365 days using the length of Bob Souer's English BSB recording: a day with longer chapters has fewer of them. They cover the 66 books found in Protestant Bibles; Catholic and Orthodox editions include additional books that are outside this calendar. Psalms use the numbering familiar in English Bibles.

Three ways to read the Bible in a year
The three common approaches change the order, not the amount: each takes you through the same 1,189 chapters once.

We suggest Parallel for a first full read-through. Gospels and letters sit alongside the harder Old Testament passages, giving you another way into the day's reading. Robert Murray M'Cheyne's well-known plan also combines different parts of Scripture, though it reads the New Testament and Psalms twice in a year.

How long does it take each day?
The average is 3.3 chapters a day. These are the lengths of complete, 66-book English recordings available in Bible Garden, divided by 365 days:

Winfred Henson's WEBUS recording is in the public domain. The calendar days were balanced against Bob Souer's BSB audio, so an individual day may take more or less time with another narrator. These averages count playback only; leave extra time for pauses and reflection.
Slow down and pay attention
A one-year goal can turn reading into a race to check off chapters. If a verse holds your attention, read it again. Taking an extra week is better than rushing through passages you want to understand.
Ways to make room for that attention:
- Pause the audio. In Bible Garden, you can add a pause after each verse, paragraph, or section, for a few seconds or until you resume playback.
- Ask one question. What does this passage say about God? What does it reveal about people? What might you carry into today?

How to listen to the Bible in a year

- Chapters play in sequence. The next chapter of the same book starts automatically; open the day's second reading separately. You can control playback from the lock screen.
- Choose a narrator. BSB has recordings by Bob Souer and David. WEBUS is read by Winfred Henson; the WEBBE recording from eBible.org has no named narrator.
- Follow your progress. A chapter is marked complete after its audio ends or you finish reading its text. The app shows progress by book and across the whole Bible.

Multi Reading: hear each verse in two translations
Multi Reading is Bible Garden's key feature. Build a sequence of steps—reading (translation and narrator), pause, then another reading—and the app plays it verse by verse. You can also group the steps by paragraph or chapter, in two translations of one language or in two different languages.
For an English comparison, try BSB with Bob Souer, a short pause, then WEBUS with Winfred Henson. Hearing the same verse in different words can make you notice a detail you missed the first time. Without pauses, the two English recordings add up to about 25 minutes per day on this plan; add as much time as you need to think.
Read the Bible in two languages
You can also pair English with Russian or Ukrainian. In Multi Reading, a verse plays in one language and then in the other; on screen, the matching verse appears beneath it. That can help a bilingual family read together or give a language learner a familiar passage to compare. The screen here shows John 1 in Russian (the Kulakov translation, BTI) and English (BSB, Bob Souer).
An English and Russian pairing takes about 28–31 minutes of audio a day with BSB and a Russian recording by Ilya Prudovsky or Nikita Semyonov-Prozorovsky—about half an hour before pauses. If you need a shorter session, use Multi Reading for just one of the day's two readings, perhaps the New Testament.
How to keep going through the year
Leviticus and Numbers can slow a first-time reader down; so can missing a week and feeling you must catch up. A few habits help:
- Pick a regular moment. Read with your morning coffee, on the train, or before bed.
- Missed a day? Resume where you stopped. Set the start date to today minus the number of days you have completed, so your next unread day falls on today and the remaining readings get new dates. You may finish later than planned, and that is fine.
- Switch between text and audio. Read at home and listen when you are out.
- Notice what you have finished. Marks on a printed calendar or the app's progress percentage show how far you have come.
- Read with someone. A friend or church group can follow the same plan and talk through difficult passages together.
