You can download an entire audio Bible for free from sources that explicitly allow it. Here are the clearest options we found as of October 5, 2026:
- Berean Standard Bible (BSB), read by Bob Souer — all 66 books, without music. The recording is dedicated to the public domain under CC0: chapter MP3s on OpenBible and the publisher’s audio page.
- World English Bible (WEB), read by Winfred Henson — all 66 books, without music. The narrator placed the recording in the public domain: MP3 ZIP files on Public Domain Audio Bibles.
- King James Version (KJV), read by Michael Armenta — a complete single-narrator LibriVox recording, about 100 hours 45 minutes, available to download with a Public Domain Mark on Internet Archive. LibriVox also offers recordings of individual books by other readers and declares its recordings public domain in the USA. Public Domain Audio Bibles has a public-domain text-to-speech alternative.
Souer’s BSB and Henson’s WEB are also the recordings you hear in Bible Garden. The app streams them rather than downloading files. KJV is not in the app. Below are the download options, the difference between text and recording rights, and when a file is more useful than streaming.
A free Bible text does not make every recording free

The BSB text is public domain, as its publisher explains on its licensing page; so is the WEB text. But text and audio have separate rights. Text rights generally expire decades after a translator’s death, while a narrator and recording producer can have rights lasting many years after a recording is made. An old translation can have a new, protected recording.
A download is straightforward when:
- The rights holder releases the recording for everyone to use, through a public-domain dedication or an open license. You can copy and share it under the stated terms; some licenses require attribution.
- An authorized site offers a download under its own terms. Those terms may allow personal listening or noncommercial ministry use without allowing redistribution.
This guide reports what publishers and download sites say about their recordings; it is not legal advice.
Free audio Bible MP3 downloads in English
| Recording | Music | Coverage | Stated permissions | Where to download |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSB — Bob Souer | No | All 66 books | CC0 1.0 public-domain dedication | OpenBible chapter files · publisher’s audio page |
| WEB — Winfred Henson | No | All 66 books | Placed in the public domain by the narrator | Public Domain Audio Bibles: Old and New Testament ZIPs |
| WEB — David Williams | Not specified by the source | Entire Bible | Placed in the public domain by the narrator in 2016 | Public Domain Audio Bibles |
| WEB — Michael Paul Johnson | Not specified by the source | Check the available books on the source page | Public domain; the source explicitly allows downloading, copying, mirroring, and sharing | eBible.org |
| WEB — LibriVox volunteers | Not specified by the source | Old and New Testament collections, with multiple readers | Public domain in the USA; check your location’s requirements | LibriVox · public-domain statement |
Souer and Henson are useful starting points if you want one consistent human voice throughout the Bible. The BSB publisher also offers CC0 readings by Barry Hays and Jordan Gilbert on its audio page. Those are download alternatives, not additional voices in Bible Garden. For voice samples and background, see our guide to audio Bible narrators.
What about a free KJV audio Bible download?
If you searched for “KJV audio Bible free download MP3,” distinguish the recording from the translation:
| KJV recording | Music | Coverage | Download terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Domain Audio Bibles, synthesized male voice | Not specified by the source | Entire Bible | The site says the recording was placed in the public domain in 2018: download page |
| LibriVox — Michael Armenta | No | Entire Bible, 100:45:26 | Free download with a Public Domain Mark: Internet Archive. LibriVox also has individual-book recordings by other readers: catalog and public-domain terms |
| AudioTreasure — Rev. Dan Wagner, for TalkingBibles.org | No; voice only, not dramatized | Entire Bible; New Testament 270 MB, Old Testament 900 MB | Offered with permission for personal and noncommercial ministry use only, rather than a public-domain release: MP3 downloads and FAQ |
| Alexander Scourby | Voice-only and dramatized editions | Entire Bible | Paid MP3 editions; the publisher prohibits duplication: official download page |
A free upload of Scourby’s reading is not evidence that the publisher authorized it. Use the official source rather than treating an unverified copy as a legal free download. The KJV text itself also has a territorial exception: the Trinitarian Bible Society explains the Crown rights retained in the UK. Do not assume that a source’s public-domain statement applies everywhere.

How to spot a questionable download
Be cautious when:
- the page names no publisher, rights holder, or terms of use;
- a torrent or file-sharing archive has no link to the original source;
- someone offers a free copy of a recording the publisher sells or only streams;
- a generic “Audio Bible” app contains ads but never identifies its recordings.
A ZIP file or file host is not inherently suspicious: legitimate publishers use them too. What matters is a traceable source and a clear statement of permission. If you are unsure, check the narrator’s or publisher’s own site.
When you really need an MP3 file
Downloading makes sense when:
- you will be without internet for days, on a camping trip or a long journey;
- your player cannot run an app, such as a car stereo that takes a USB drive or an older MP3 player;
- you want to give someone a recording on a drive or disc;
- your mobile connection is slow or expensive.
Allow enough storage. In Bible Garden, Souer’s BSB runs about 69 hours and Henson’s WEB about 84 hours, measured from the app’s audio files on October 4, 2026. Archive size depends on duration and MP3 quality: Henson’s WEB download lists 995 MB for the Old Testament and 320 MB for the New Testament — roughly 1.3 GB together. Both recordings have clear public-domain permissions for copying and sharing. For KJV, AudioTreasure’s voice-only reading by Rev. Dan Wagner lists 270 MB for the New Testament and 900 MB for the Old Testament — roughly 1.2 GB together, under the site’s personal and noncommercial ministry terms. Download sizes are as listed by the sources checked on October 5, 2026.
Why Bible Garden streams instead of downloading

Bible Garden has no offline audio mode. It needs an internet connection; playback will not continue without one. In airplane mode, leave Wi-Fi on and connected. With internet available, the app offers:
- An immediate start at any chapter, without downloading an entire collection or storing gigabytes on your phone.
- Audio aligned with the text verse by verse. The current verse is highlighted, and previous/next verse controls jump to its beginning.
- Background listening, including with the screen off, and play/pause on the lock screen.
If you need an app with offline audio downloads, see our comparison of free audio Bible apps.
What an ordinary MP3 file cannot do

Multi Reading is Bible Garden’s key feature. A verse plays in one translation, then after a pause in another — for example, BSB followed by WEB. All selected translations appear under each verse, with the one playing highlighted. A chapter MP3 is a continuous recording of one reading; it does not switch translations verse by verse.
Listen to John 1:1–5 in BSB, read by Bob Souer, followed by WEB, read by Winfred Henson. You can mix languages too, as the screen shows with English BSB and Ukrainian Khomenko.

- Choose a narrator by listening to a sample, including Bob Souer or David for BSB.
- Track progress, with listened-to chapters marked automatically and progress shown for each book.
Bible Garden is free, with no ads or in-app purchases, on iPhone and iPad. Listening on our website and an Android version are in our plans.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I legally download a free audio Bible in English?
For a complete human reading without music, start with Bob Souer’s BSB on OpenBible or Winfred Henson’s WEB on Public Domain Audio Bibles. The BSB recording has a CC0 dedication, and Henson placed his WEB recording in the public domain. Links and other options are in the table above.
Can I download the KJV audio Bible for free as MP3s?
Yes. LibriVox’s complete KJV read by Michael Armenta is available on Internet Archive with a Public Domain Mark; it runs 100:45:26. LibriVox also has individual-book readings, public domain in the USA. Public Domain Audio Bibles offers a synthesized KJV recording it declares public domain. AudioTreasure offers Rev. Dan Wagner’s voice-only KJV under personal and noncommercial ministry terms. KJV is not in Bible Garden.
Can I listen to Bible Garden without internet?
No. The app streams audio and has no offline download mode. In airplane mode, keep Wi-Fi on and connected.
Where can I download the Bible text rather than audio?
The BSB publisher provides text downloads through its licensing page, and eBible.org provides the public-domain WEB text in downloadable formats. Text permissions and recording permissions are separate.
Can I upload a downloaded recording to my YouTube channel?
Only when its permissions allow redistribution. Souer’s CC0 BSB and Henson’s public-domain WEB are clear examples. A personal-use download does not give you permission to re-upload it. Follow any attribution or other license conditions, even when the underlying Bible text is free.
